Mattieu Guillaume Bonnefoy

"I’m… Canada… b-but… but what’s happened to me?"
Once in a while I act like a child to feel like a kid again; It gets like a prison in the body I'm living in
Cause everyone's watching and quick to start talking, I'm losing my innocence; wish I were a little girl without the weight of the world

Country: Novelle France and British Held Acadia and other parts (The names for the regions are a bit odd and at this time England and France hold a part of Mattieu)
Human name: Mattieu Guillaume Bonnefoy/ Matthew Kirkland/ Matthew Williams (Guillaume is French for William, just adding it because it explains how he eventually has William for a last name). She doesn’t yet have a female name.
Apparent age: 2 but appears younger to some due to her build and mannerisms
Gender: Female this time around
Appearance:
Matthew is a petite and slightly more effeminate twin to Alfred. Her eyes are a violet you can see in the Aurora Borealis and her skin is pale like the snow. She has a very slight delicate looking build, but is quite hardy. Her hair is pale like a soft wheat or honey blonde as opposed to the golden blonde her twin possesses. Unfortunately something seemed to occur in the spell to change the once male into a female. One thing you’ll never see her without is her life-long companion Kumajirou a polar bear who is still male.
It would be nice to start over again, before we were men

Strengths:
- Scholarly aspects
- Staying calm in tense situations/ peacekeeping
- Stealth/ invisibility
- Loyalty/ durability
- His heart
- Determination
Weaknesses:
- Tendency to internalize his emotions
- Low Self-Esteem
- Cannibalism/Feral history
- Invisibility
- Physically weak without a Hockey Stick or something to protect
- Too forgiving/ tendency to allow himself to be taken advantage of
Personality:
Matthew is shy, gentle, soft-spoken, polite, quite sensitive, obedient, and well-mannered. He is used to being very independent, though he does desire closeness with people. He tends toward a bit of depression and typically is quiet due to the blues, though this is from being disappointed and left alone and often ignored by most unless they are less savory or trying to get something from him/upset. He is never far from his brother bear Kumajirou.
He is not amused by comments regarding his weakness, invisibility, or femininity and unfortunately internalized much of the feelings and got into a bad habit of continuing that practice and not speaking about what upsets him. That is not to say he is a push-over. When his long patience finally reaches its end, he is regarded as something someone might associate with an emotionless and feral beast (or a hockey nut). He is highly intelligent and has studied much thanks to his free time granted by his invisibility. The people around him do see another oddity in that he loves to stay in the forest and seemingly converse with the plants and animals. He can see some types of Spirits faintly, but never mentioned anything as France and Alfred couldn’t and he wasn’t exactly on good terms with England at the time. He never got the courage to tell Arthur that he also had Sight (plus most spirits in N. America aren’t nice like faeries…).
Matthew doesn't typically need to hide his feelings thanks to his special power, but does so furthering the Canadian Doormat stereotype. However, he does have a fierce and passionate side to him, not only displayed in Molson commercials or Hockey matches. You could describe him to be similar to two of his famous animals: the beaver and the polar bear. Like a beaver that mates for life, he is loyal (though the mating for life has yet to be seen). He thinks and plans ahead. Also he does tend to spread out (though not in the same sense a beaver would, though they have spread across Russia creating flood issues). Similar to the polar bear, he tends to blend in and remain solitary. He is social, but situations tend to leave him alone with his seemingly narcoleptic companion. One thing that should always be remembered about him is that he also has the rage of a polar bear. Beware upsetting him, especially if a hockey stick is nearby and never threaten those he loves or is loyal to.
Canada is one of the most compassionate Nations you'll meet, a trait he shares with his somewhat better know neighbor-brother. If there is a crisis or area in turmoil, best bets are that Canada will respond and be there with aid shortly. Unlike America, Canada is an ethnic collective rather than a melting pot. His people sadly more often than not will call themselves anything but Canadian, something that he still isn't quite at terms with, though he does enjoy how some Nations visit because of it. Canada has a lot of internal issues with himself due to past events and tends to internalize most of them, rather than trouble others. He has a warped view of how much a bother he is to his family and friends and tries to be as independent as possible. Unfortunately his mind is fragile and with enough maneuvering with his natural tendency toward depression he could be easily manipulated to dependency, even though he is quite stable economically.
In the 1500s Canada had been abandoned by Iceland and Portugal began to explore it. Canada was still very feral, though still slightly domesticated from when Iceland had him. Iceland was the first Nation to meet him and when that occurred Canada was more connected with his animals and lived with them, shy of his Native People though he was very curious and liked to peek at them. Iceland slowly domesticated him and tried to get him more accustomed to people and somewhat succeeded, though Canada did still have his animalistic and cannibalistic habits. At this time Canada was like a very shy dog.

Family: In a sense originally the Nordics were Canada’s family as Iceland found him first and settled his land before any other Europeans. Iceland domesticated him and taught him to trust, which allowed the following countries to approach and civilize him. Once they left/died out, France got the joy of civilizing him and with England became his parental figures (. Alfred is his southern twin, though Matthew has always been with Kumajirou and in a sense is his brother as well. He faintly remembers the time with the Vikings, but doesn’t want to force himself in anyone else’s family. He considers the Commonwealth Nations as half-siblings, but his closest family is Kumajirou, then France, America, and England.
Friends: Generally Canada is friends with most modern Nations and even extends a supportive hand to those who do not regard him as a friend (North Korea). Cuba, Turkey, Ukraine, Finland, and many others have great political bonds with Canada though they may not always remember the Nation. In the 1500s, Canada doesn't really have any Nations as friends just some interested in his resources.
History:
After 2010, the world seemed to go through many different difficulties and thanks to conservation efforts and planning by his government Canada wasn’t too terribly affected. The main issue came in when he tried to send humanitarian aid… More countries saw how well Canada was kept and Canada’s government started to be a little less giving, especially when America (among others) started to push a little on its northern brother. The government started getting worried and wanted a strong partner to keep itself protected, so it decided to create a stronger partnership with America. Unfortunately this partnership seemed to be more of a drain on the country. To Canada it seemed no matter what he tried, he would still be given the short end of the stick or hit with said stick. Nothing hurt more than what happened the day before the send back. The day before, Canada woke with a sharp pain in his heart that wouldn’t go away. It remained a strong steady pain for the rest of that day. That day the last group of wild Polar Bears succumbed to a disease and Canada found his lifelong companion curled up at his feet cold and still. He had a breakdown and spent the rest of the day curled up on his couch unable to move his brother. He fell asleep eventually without telling anyone.
When Canada woke, he almost had a panic attack until he realized Kumajirou sitting next to him. After realizing Kumajirou was alright, he found out he was now a she and panicked. Soon she began to guess it wasn't the same time period, so how was she to proceed? The fact he is female hasn’t really hit him/her yet and she’s not sure if she should reveal it… She worried about what will become of her, as the Europeans will likely soon be exploring, exploiting, and abandoning her.
She isn't sure how she will be able to take her future treatment this time around, especially after knowing how it was to be a country of her own. The feral and cannibalistic tendencies she had are fighting to resurface as she faces the probability of being alone and forgotten again. She began to scour for any trace of European influence in her lands, starting to the West and then making her way East. In a way she knows she had to be in the past, but worries that maybe the future was all in her head? A dream? She needs proof that her male existence wasn't a lie, otherwise it's very likely she will go feral and be extremely weary of any exploring Nation.
She's afraid to see if France or anyone knows about the time change and worries about changing anything about the future, but there is one thing she is determined to change. Her goal if anything is to ensure the protection of his wildlife and push more environmental initiatives for the rest of the world. If she can also help stop or lessen the social dilemmas, she’d also be happy though she worries about changing too much and what it might have them end up with in the future.
And when it's the end, our lives will make sense
